Enjoy an Active, Outdoor Lifestyle in the Perfect Climate of Puerto Morelos

Jun 07, 2023

There are many reasons to love the Riviera Maya. Gorgeous beaches, a welcoming culture, inexpensive lodging and activities, and fantastic food. But there is no doubt that the weather stands out. In fact, "the sun and the beach" are the main reason tourists choose to visit the Mexican Caribbean, according to the Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo (SEDETUR).

In this blog, we will share details about what makes the weather conditions of the Riviera Maya, and precisely, Puerto Morelos, so perfect.

The climate of Puerto Morelos

With an average annual temperature of 79 degrees F (26 degrees C), it's always a great day for going to the beach, dining outdoors, visiting an adventure park, or window shopping in the open-air shops. Once you have been here a while, you may stop checking the weather since it only varies by a few degrees throughout the year.

The number of hours of sunshine doesn't vary much each month either. May, July, and August have the most daylight hours, with an average of 10 hours per day. But even from October to February, the Mayan Riviera weather only has slightly less sun, with approximately eight hours per day.

A large percentage of visitors who come to Puerto Morelos come from colder countries (50.3% USA, 15.7% from Canada, and 15.7% from Europe), as well as from large cities in Mexico (16.8%), and our perfect, endless summer temperature is what draws them. Whether you are looking for a week or two to bask in the sunshine and replenish your vitamin D, or you are ready to leave the snow shovels behind for good, Puerto Morelos' weather is ideal.

Ocean Temperature

The Riviera Maya's ocean average temperature is 81.5 F - 27.5 C, which makes it perfect for year-round water activities. Our visitors from colder climates are thrilled to learn this is much warmer than the oceans or lakes in their home country ever get.

Best Season for diving and snorkeling

With the second largest barrier reef off the coast, many people travel to Puerto Morelos for diving and snorkeling. There isn't a wrong time to get in the water here. Average ocean visibility is around 100 feet (30 m) year-round. The best conditions for underwater exploration are December through May. August has the warmest water temperatures.

Air quality and health benefits

Another beneficial aspect of the climate in the Riviera Maya is the air quality. Those looking to relocate due to health concerns will be happy to learn that Puerto Morelos has excellent air quality and ozone levels. Those with respiratory illnesses will find this of particular interest.

It's also noteworthy that many people who have moved to the Mexican Caribbean say they feel healthier, with fewer colds or viruses. This makes sense, as the warm climate makes it harder for germs to thrive. This is just another reason this area is ideal for those looking for a healthy, active lifestyle where they can spend time outdoors all year!

Quick Weather Tips

If you are a runner, plan to run early in the morning or evening in the warmest months.

Mosquitos are more prevalent in the summer months, so bring insect repellant.

With the abundant sunshine in the Riviera Maya, biodegradable sunscreen is a good idea!

The climate here allows you to try your hand at growing new plants. Papaya, bananas, and limes grow espcesially well. Can you imagine having a lime tree growing in your backyard? Many foreigners also enjoy cultivating potted herb gardens. Tomatoes do well potted here too.

The Riviera Maya is truly a magical, diverse place, and our fantastic weather plays a large part. This is just one of the many reasons we chose Puerto Morelos as the home of our residential project, Selva Escondida.
